Steve Irwin: Idiot or Hero?

I know many people have different views of Steve Irwin and I was just wondering what other Nookies think of him. I personally thought he was a great person and did a lot for the environment?

Well what do you think?

I must admit that I never watched him, I avoided watching him and I would not have paid to watch him… I think his jingoism irritated me too much.

I don’t understand the hero worship. It’s a modern-day phenomena, not just restricted to Steve Irwin, and I’m not sure it says good things about us. Nor does the fact that the post-death tributes from Australians seemed to have been louder for no other reason than he was a big international success. Reeks of small-nation syndrome.

He used to make me cringe - I feared he gave the impression to the world that we in Australia are all crocodile wrestling boguns. It would have been nice to see him out of the khakis and acting “normal” sometimes. His marriage to an American smacked of free entry into the USA, and I am now cringing at the way his daughter is being manipulated. However, I was very sorry to hear of his death, he was a showman and you’d have to be somewhat of an idiot to do the things he did.
At the end of the day, he died before his time and the sadness at his passing is more for his two young children who will grow up without their Dad.
As for the wife, I reckon she will not be without a husband for long, I saw a lot of body language going in in the docos that have been on.

Yeah some others who think like me. I didn’t really like him when he was alive and my opinion didn’t change when he died. I thought what a shame and got on with my day. Many of my friends didn’t like him when he was alive and then soon as he died they automatically felt sorry for him and just Had to watch, listen and read everything the media decided to throw at us.

Unmistakedly IDIOT. From the first time I saw him my impression was ‘this guy is nuts”.

Way before his death a joke was going the rounds:

Did you hear Steve Irwin was dead?
    No, how did that happen?
    Got eaten by a crocodile!

I know he did a lot of good works blah, blah, and I don’t decry that at all but in his chosen field he took risks and ultimately…….

I also find Domestic Goddess’s comments about his wife harsh and unstantiated but find I am unable to reply to her/him direct.

domestic goddess I do not think Terri will ever remarry.Terri loved Steve with all her heart and soul and still does. Before you start picking on Terri please look in your own back yard. As for Bindi she is doing what she wants to do no one is pushing her, she does her schooling and plays but she also is a Wildlife Warrior and is carring on her dads work. All the person above did was ask what people thought of Steve NOT what you thought about Terri or Bindi. You don’t know the Irwins nor do you live with them so Please leave Terri, Bindi and Bob out of it

Aspen.. get a reality check, Steve’s most important thing in his life was his family, so commenting on Terri, Bindi & Bob is just as relevant in the Steve Erwin Story as commenting on the animals he treasured so much… I’m guessing that you are not a parent.. because at Bindi’s age.. did you really think that she knows what she is goiing to do for the rest of your life.. I think she is being empowered to morn the loss of her father by following in his foots steps and is being encouraged to do so by adults around her.. a child of 8 is guided.. & adults are guiding her!!! Thats not to say she is doing things against her will… and as for leaving them out of it… they put themselves in the public eye.. or did not you see Steves funeral…

ahhhhhhh but the question was “Steve Irwin: Idiot or Hero?”
That had nothing to do with Terri Bindi nor Bob. And you guessed wrong. I am a parent of 6 but also raised my two cousins from the ages 5 & 7. So that means I have or am raising 8.
One owns his own home & business, One is a manger in a bucthers dept, one has her own family raising her son, one works two jobs, one is a chef, one is a teacher,
and one is a motor mechanic the youngest is still schooling.
Bindi was born in the business and from day one Terri & Steve said the zoo would be hers one day. No one complained about the way Bindi was be raised before Steve died why now? Is it our business to tell Terri how to raise her children? NO.
Bindi is a great kid and I bet she & Bob will do their dad proud.

Get a grip people. Steve was Steve. he did things his way. As for what is happening to his widow and children. Who”s businness is it. Do you pay that much attention to your neighbours. If they are still in the public eye in 10 years then bitch about what has happened. But to do it now, is just grief. it takes time to get on with your life after loosing a loved one. Just watch don’t mouth off till you know all the facts. Steve was a hero in my home. Now he is gone he is gone. so we will wait for the next Aussie to try and make docos on the wild life.

    I agree with onewhowishes
