On January 26, 1788, a fleet of ships landed in Botany Bay (or Sydney Cove, not sure if they are the same), Sydney.
These ships contained convicts from England, which we would hardly term as prisoners this day and age - bascially they were arrested for crimes that were quite petty in today’s standard. The ship was commanded by Captain Arthur Phillip.
These prisoners or convicts were the first Europeans to settle in Australia.
This was done without cheating/googling or whatever, remembered from school days.
January 26… it was the landing of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove, I think, as they found Botany Bay too inhospitable…
… I think… sorry if it’s wrong!
To celebrate Australia day, my family and friends got together and ate Australian foods (Anzac biscuits, home made lamingtons, vegemite and cheese pita breads and meat pies), played Uno and celebrity heads (with a special round for only Aussie celebrities), had a bit of booze, watched a DVD (Lady in the Water), then went for a night-walk. It was absolutely fantastic, and the first time I’ve done anything to celebrate Australia Day.
The first fleet did infact go to Botany Bay, but found it unsuitable to settle, even though Captain James Cook had noted that Botany Bay was indeed suitable - they felt it did not provide enough fresh water for their needs - this was on 20th January 1788. They moved on, landing in Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788.
I went to the Treasury Gardens to enjoy the aboriginal concert, the gathering had met at the State Library and marched in protest against the leniency toward the policeman who was found not responsible for the death of an aboriginal man in police custody on Palm Island. When i got home i learned that a decision has been made to try the policeman in court. I thought that there was a good turnout to this event considering i didn’t think it had been well publicised.
